History of the Conecuh Training School
The Conecuh County Training School was founded in 1917 as a pioneer in the education of Blacks in Alabama. Through the donations of Black and White persons of Conecuh County and the backing of The Rosenwald Fund, a fund that provided assistance in establishing Black schools in rural areas of the south, construction of the Conecuh County Training School was begun in 1918.
At the time, the Conecuh County Training School was one of the largest and most impressive schools built with Rosenwald Funds in southwest Alabama. And few Black rural communities in 1918 could brag about having a two story brick school building for children to attend.
