1883 Commissioner’s Report

 

Commissioner’s Court, February 1883

Conecuh County

 

“Court met Monday, February 12. Present — Hon. P.C. Walker, Judge J.M. Yates, D.J. Foshee and L. W. Brantley. The day was consumed in hearing the opinions of the citizens in various portions of the county in regard to the building of the new court house. Many opinions were advanced, but nothing definite was determined.

 

The following are the apportioners appointed:

The report of the committee appointed to examine the new bridge in Beat 13, built by W. H. Doggett, was rejected. The new road in Mixon’s beat was granted. Ordered, that the road from Evergreen to Mineral Springs be changed so as to run on the land line between Dr. McCreary and Strout, at the expense of the petitioners. Ordered, that the former road running from Old Sparta to Sparta Depot be reopened. Ordered, that a new bridge built across Murder Creek near Sparta depot, after the old road is re-opened; provided cost of said bridge does not exceed $125. Ordered, that the sheriff’s feed bills be endorsed by the Probate Judge. Ordered, that J.W. Davison be allowed $7.50 for publishing tax assessor’s and tax collector’s notices. Ordered, that E. Rosenfield be allowed $25 for furniture for county offices. Ordered, that J. B. Cooper be allowed $45.75 for sundries for county by sheriff. Ordered, that P.C. Walker be allowed $78.85 for furniture for his office, and express and freight on stationery. Ordered, that A.E. Henderson be allowed $34.50 for work on old court house and leg shackles for office. That C.S. James be allowed $228.12 for feeding paupers for quarter ending February 14, 1883. That C.S. James be allowed $7.36 for burying paupers and for medicine for paupers. That P.C. Walker be allowed $225 for re-cording mortgages destroyed by the burning of the old courthouse. That the Probate Judge have plans and specifications made for a new court house, after the plan and specifications of the Coffee County court house, with the following changes, viz.: A change of partitions on the first floor, but with same number of rooms, with one double vault about 4 x 16 feet, with doors opening into the offices of the Judge of Probate and Circuit Clerk; and after said plans and specifications are made for said building, they shall be submitted to this court for adoption or rejection. Said plans and specifications to be for a building not to cost exceeding $5, 500. Said building to be covered with sheet iron. That the Probate Judge sell the old iron, iron safes, brick, and everything of any value belonging to this county and not specially needed, to the best advantage.

 

Wednesday evening court adjourned to the first Monday in March.
