[1909] Owassa:

Our city has been growing rapidly. Mr. Will Brooks’ new dwelling will soon be ready for occupancy. G.A. Yates has moved into his new store. The Myers’ Bros. new store is nearing completion. The Methodist Episcopal parsonage is also nearing completion and material has been placed on the ground for the M.E. church.

 

Willie Yates and sisters, Misses Ethel and Lucy, visited the family of A.E. Long at Garland recently.

 

Mrs. Susan Burgamy is convalescent after an attack of pneumonia.

 

Bob Burgamy returned to his home in Jay, Fla., Sunday, after visiting relatives here. The holidays passed off quietly here. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves immensely.

 

Mrs. Dr. Mason and children spent Christmas with relatives in Ft. Deposit.

 

Bob Myers spent the holidays here with home folks.

 

Nick and Ernest Butler spent Christmas Day with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Butler.

 

Miss Fannie Pitts returned home Sunday from Verbena, Montgomery and Searcy where she has been visiting relatives.

 

Miss Maggie Mason, of Belleville, visited her brother, Dr. David Mason, last week. She was accompanied by Miss Bessie Yates, who will assist her with her school at Belleville.

 

Mrs. J.M. Houston and children have returned home from Montgomery. She was a guest of Mrs. C. J. Wicker.

 

H.S. Myers, of Opp, spent a few days last week with his parents, Mr.and Mrs. J.R. Myers.

 

Jim Ray, of Pensacola, was at home a few days this week.

 

The many friends of Mrs. J.T. Hoomes will be pleased to learn that she is rapidly improving from a serious attack of typhoid fever.

 

Dr. W. B. Shaver, of Herbert, visited his daughter, Mrs. J. M. Houston, Saturday last.

 

Charles Thomas, of Mobile, is visiting friends at this place.

 

Mr. Ed. Hoomes and little sons, Charlie and Wilburn, of Chapman, visited the family of J.T. Hoomes Sunday. Andrew McLeod, of Evergreen, spent a few days last week with relatives here.

 

Earl Perkins and Miss Mamie Houston visited your city one day last week.

 

Johnnie Pickens and family, accompanied by their mother, Mrs. Amanda Pickens, spent the Christmas with relatives at Jay, Fla.

 

Sunday last was a beautiful day and a great many people from Evergreen took advantage of the fine roads which have been completed and drove into your little city. We could not be more pleased to more of you do likewise.

 

Mr. Ben Page and daughters, of Evergreen, spent a few hours here Sunday with Mr. Page’s son, Robert, who is agent at this place.

 

Wade Martin and family, of Atmore, visited the family of Joe Pickens last week.

 

Dr. David Mason was in Evergreen last Monday.

Neighborhood Gossip

 

Rev. J.W. Frazer of Montgomery spent a couple of days here last week with his sister, Mrs. Dr. W.F. Betts.

 

Miss Ethlyn Fuquay of Alexander City, is spending some time with the family of her uncle, T.E. Champion.

 

Prof. H.T. Lile went up to Decatur on Thursday last to deliver an address at a Masonic celebration near that city on the 24th.

 

Jas. J. Lee of Range was here on business one day last week. He ahs removed his mercantile business from Lenox to Range and now offers his Lenox property for sale.

 

G.W. Salter left on Saturday for his home in Monroe County after spending several weeks with the family of his son, the editor of this paper. He was accompanied by Edward M. Salter of the Courant force.

 

J.N. Deloney now has his bakery in operation, having turned out the first bread yesterday. It is of superior quality and will no doubt, give satisfaction. This is a much needed enterprise and Mr. Deloney should receive the patronage of the entire public.

R.B.Wallace and Miss Mahalie Baggett were married on Wednesday evening last, at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Baggett, in Castleberry. They reached here Thursday morning and will make Evergreen their home. Mr. Wallace is employed at McNutt’s barber shop. The Courant extends good wishes.

 

Rev. R. B. McGehee, son of Dr. O.C. McGehee, preached two very able and interesting sermons at the Methodist church on Sunday morning and at the Baptist church at night. He graduated at Vanderbilt University last week and is at home to spend a few days with his parents.

 

The Courant is requested to say that there will be a fish fry and picnic at the El Pond on July 4th. The public are cordially invited to attend and all are expected to take baskets of edibles. Fish will be supplied in great abundance.

 

There will be a picnic at the Coleman place on the Brooklyn and Evergreen road on July 4th, and a cordial invitation is extended the public to be present with big baskets of good things to eat.

 

French’s stave mill has been closed down for several days on account of a break in some of the machinery. He hopes to have the damage repaired in a few days and resume operations.

 

The Courant is asked to say that there will be a fish fry and picnic at the residence of N.M. Fortner, near Mt. Union on Saturday next, July 2, to which the public are cordially invited.

 

All who feel concerned will please meet at Concord Church (fork of Sepulga) Wednesday, July 13th with tools necessary to work and clean up the graveyard.

 

A concrete sidewalk is being put down in front of the courthouse grounds. It has long been needed and will no doubt be appreciated by the public.

 

Rev. C.W. Northcutt of Girard, stopped off here for a few days this week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Northcutt, en route to Monroeville to assist in a series of revival meetings.

 

Allen Page of Castleberry, was here today on business.

Notice of Application for Pardon

Notice is hereby given that application will be made to the governor of Alabama to pardon Shed Thomas, convicted at the spring term 1906 of the circuit court held for Conecuh County, Alabama, of murder in the first degree and punishment fixed at imprisonment in the penitentiary for the term of life.
