James G. Coleman, Jr.

 

  Rev. James G. Coleman, Jr., son of Rev. James Coleman and Rachel Kolb of Darlington District, South Carolina, was born 11 Jan 1797 in SC, and died 08 Feb 1857 in Monroe Co, AL. He married (1) Mary Ann Hunter Bef. 1811, daughter of Thomas Hunter and Elizabeth Hunter. She was born Abt. 1790, and died Bef. 1815 in SC. He married (2) Clarissa E. King Bef. Oct 1815 in SC, daughter of William King and Elizabeth King. Clarissa was born Abt. 1797 in SC, and died Bef. 21 Dec 1859 in Monroe Co, AL.

 

July 24, 1824 (copied from minutes of the Bellville Baptist Church by Margaret J. Gaston):

 

"The church met agreeable to adjournment after Divine worship sat in conference. A door was opened for the admission of members. First, received REBECCA JACKSON by experience; Second, received by letter the following brethren and sisters, viz: JOHN ELLIS and CATHERINE ELLIS, his wife; SARAH FOUNTAIN, ELIZABETH S. FOUNTAIN, JAMES COLEMAN and CLARESSA (King) COLEMAN, his wife; CATHERINE (Coleman) KING; JOHN KING and ELIZABETH (Coleman) KING, his wife, and SARAH C. KING, his daughter."

 

Note: The above Coleman, King & Fountain families had been dismissed from Mechanicsville Baptist Church in SC in 1823 to move to Alabama. Maiden names have been added by Bill King.

 

Note: The above data would establish the arrival in Conecuh of these families from Darlington, SC by 24 July 1824.

 

21 March 1829 (copied from church minutes):

 

"The church went into the choice of a deacon. Bro. James Coleman was chosen by the church. Agreed the fifth Sabbath in August and Friday and Saturday before set apart for the ordination of Bro Coleman as deacon. Bro Alexander Travis is requested to invite ministering brethren to attend."

 

James G. Coleman is also shown as the "messenger" for the Murder Creek Baptist Church (now Bellville Baptist Church) in the 'State of the Churches Report' of the Bethlehem Baptist Ass'n for the years 1828, 1830, 1831, 1834, and 1837.

 

Notes for Clarissa E. King: Clarissa was the sister of Melissa King, who married Daniel E. Witherington in Conecuh County, AL in 1825. Clarissa and Rev. James Coleman are living in Monroe County, AL on the 1850 Census, she was age 53, born in SC. He was 61, born in SC.
