Levi Ham

Levi Ham (CSA Soldier)and his older brother,
William Jones Ham (CSA Soldier) of Conecuh County, AL

After the outbreak of the War Between the States, brothers William Jones Ham and Levi Ham mustered into Co. F of the 1st. Battalion of Hilliard's Legion in Montgomery as privates on May 14, 1862. William was 34 years old and Levi was 24 years of age. They later transferred into the 23rd Alabama Infantry, Co. F and then finally into Co. F. 23rd Batallion Alabama Sharpshooters. They served in the Army of Northern Virginia. Levi was promoted to corporal on May 1, 1863. Levi and William were transferred with the balance of their unit to the 23rd. Alabama Infantry Regiment.

William J. Ham was wounded several times and spent much of the war in hospitals in Knoxville, Raleigh, Danville, VA, and finally, toward the end of the war, in Montgomery.  Levi was with the Army of Northern Virginia until the end and parolled out at Appomatox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.

Following the war Levi Ham returned to work his farm and care for his family, but it was short lived as he died of cancer sometime about 1867. His wife, Elizabeth Page) Ham, raised her two children living next to her parents, Bennett and Gracie Page.

William J. Ham recovered from his wounds, continued to work the Ham farmlands and raised a large family. Levi's daughter, Catherine, married Dunk Carter and lived in Keithville, LA.
