Church Minutes - Murder Creek/Bellville Baptist Church
John King and his wife Elizabeth 'Betsy' Coleman King and Catherine Coleman King (sister of Elizabeth Coleman King and the widow of James King, Sr), were dismissed from Mechanicsville Baptist Church in Darlington, SC in 1823 to move to Alabama. He was the son of John King, Sr. and Patience Speight of Darlington District, SC.
Per minutes of the Murder Creek/Bellville Baptist Church as copied by Margaret J. Gaston:
July 24, 1824:
"The church met agreeable to adjournment after Divine worship sat in conference. A door was opened for the admission of members. First, received REBECCA JACKSON by experience;Second, received by letter the following brethren and sisters, viz: JOHN ELLIS and CATHERINE (McCrainie) ELLIS, his wife; SARAH FOUNTAIN (dau of John Fountain), ELIZABETH S. (Eliza King) FOUNTAIN (widow of John Fountain); JAMES COLEMAN and CLARESSA (King) COLEMAN, his wife; CATHERINE (Coleman) KING (widow of James King, Sr.); JOHN KING and ELIZABETH (Coleman) KING, his wife, and SARAH C. KING, his daughter."

October 1829:
Church Minutes: Brother J.R. Hawthorn was appointed Church Clerk to fill the vacancy of Bro. John King,'late clerk'.
John King is shown as the "messenger" for the Murder Creek Baptist Church (now Bellville Baptist Church) in the 'State of the Churches Report' of the Bethlehem Baptist Ass'n (1826-1845) for the years 1826, 1827 & 1829. John King was serving as the Church Clerk when he died in 1829, according to the Minutes of the Church (see below). He is buried at Murder Creek Baptist Church Cemetery (now Bellville Baptist Church.)

Note: John King, Jr. and Elizabeth 'Betsy' Coleman were the parents of Lt. William R. King, who died in 1848 in Orizaba, Mexico during the Mexican-American War.Lt. King's body was brought home for burial at Bellville Baptist Church Cemetery along side his family and parents.
