CSA Soldier

William Henry Ward

William Henry Ward was the oldest son of Ira Ward and Rachel Etheredge.  Both of his parents were born to early settlers of the Fork Sepulga Area of Conecuh County. William H. Ward had at least 2 brothers and 3 sisters according to the 1850 census records of Conecuh County. He was born in this same Fork Sepulga area on February 10, 1843.

CSA Soldier William H. Ward was the Great-Grandson of SC Patriot Thomas Ward and Ann Goodson Ward, both being honored here later today.

William H. Ward enlisted as a private in the 23rd Alabama Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the War between the States.

The 23rd Alabama Volunteer Infantry Regiment mustered into Confederate service at Camp Wilcox near Montgomery on November 19, 1861. The men enlisted for three years or the duration of the war. Like many other Confederate units, private citizens and the State of Alabama armed and equipped the Regiment rather than the Confederate government. Colonel Franklin K. Beck of Wilcox, AL assumed command as the Regiment's first commander and remained the Commander until his death near Resaca, GA in October, 1864. Colonel Joseph B. Bibb of Montgomery, AL was the Regiment's last commander.

Conecuh County marriage records indicate that William H. Ward married Margaret Chitty on March 1, 1868, following the War. Margaret was the daughter of John Chitty, another early settler of the Fork Sepulga area.

Margaret Chitty Ward, wife of William H. Ward, died April 21, 1918 and rests beside the grave of her husband in an unmarked grave. According to census records, Margaret was born about 1847 in Alabama.

The CSA grave marker being dedicated today for Private William H. Ward reads as follows:

William H. Ward

Company F, 23rd Alabama Infantry

Confederate States of America

Born February 10, 1843 - Died October 13, 1872

There are a number of descendants of William H. Ward and Margaret Chitty who are with us today at this dedication ceremony to honor the life of this brave Alabama Soldier.
