Looking back in history we find the person that probably contributed more to a community’s well-being was the country physcian or doctor. The term "Doctor" meant medical doctor, tooth doctor, or eye doctor. The doctor was often considered as much a member of the family to their patients as a brother or sister. In the early years of Conecuh County there were very few doctors, they had none of the modern tools of today for practicing their profession, were expected to travel to remote areas, often on horseback or in horse-drawn buggy, to calm a worried parents whose baby had developed a cough or fever. Their medical knowledge was limited as was their medical bag. Experience turned out to be their best teacher. Their pay was poor as they served a community that was in general poor itself. The pay sometimes came down to " much obliged until you are better paid." Many babies were born into cold, dark bedrooms with the aid of warm water from the kitchen stove. And they were called to confirm the death of a family member. Before the advent of telephones, someone would be sent into town to fetch the doctor if he was needed. But despite the hardships they encountered, most were dedicated to their profession and the families and persons that they served.
